  • ( ) Life's pretty good -- if you're a screech owl

What's not to like, after all, if, let's say, you're a screech owl? There isn't much snow, which means mice cannot hide from you under deep drifts. Come nightfall, they're forced to seek food in the open, where scuttling through the dry leaves makes them easy to hear. All you need to do is perch, quietly waiting, then swoop down and skewer your dinner when mice feet make noise. A deer mouse or two and before long it's dawn -- time to head home to sleep for the day.

Where you sleep will depend on -- who else? -- human beings. If none are around, you'll seek out a knothole in the open woodlands you prefer. If those woods have been subdivided and homes now stand there, your tree options may have diminished. Humans seem bent on removing old trees in which knotholes will shortly appear. More>>

  • ( ) Newly Divorced Mercedes Talking with Fiat

Alliances have become the auto industry's holy grail, following a slew of failed takeovers. Even Mercedes, fresh from its divorce with Chrysler, is on the prowl. Fiat Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne confirmed today that he is talking with Mercedes about a possible cooperation, among others.

Mercedes has said it is seeking alliances, but hasn't mentioned the Italian automaker. Logically, Mercedes needs to team up with someone in small cars. Peugeot, Citroen and Toyota teamed up to produce micro-cars together in Europe, and the new Ford Ka will share a platform and production line with the Fiat 500 in Poland. Mercedes smaller models, the A-Class and B-Class, do not share a platform or parts with the rest of the Mercedes lineup, and therefore suffer a high cost base.

The Mercedes-Fiat talks come seven years after then Daimler-Benz sought to take a major stake in Fiat Auto, losing out to General Motors. More>>

  • ( ) Panasonic camera addresses need for AA solution

While most camera buyers are looking for rechargeable lithium ion battery packs there is a niche for the simple AA solution and Panasonic is addressing this with its new point-and-shoot DMC-LS80. We've had a little camera that just ran on AA batteries and it had its uses when we were roughing it with no electricity nearby and no solar solution set up.

This entry-level model has a three times optical zoom with 8.1 megapixel resolution and such features as an optical image stabilizer to compensate for those wobbly fingers, intelligent ISO that determines whether or not the subject is moving and adjusts the ISO and setting and shutter speed accordingly, an auto macro feature that makes the switch to macro on its own for those close-up shots and a quick auto focus. Useful features that will make the beginner feel that much more capable behind the camera. More>>
